Welcome to my giveaway for the Black Friday Book Bonanza Giveaway Blog Hop hosted by Book Savvy Babe. Be sure to click her link to check out the other blogs participating in this giveaway!

For this giveaway I'm giving away an e-version of my young adult novel, Remembrance!

New Hampshire high school junior Lizzie Davenport has been reincarnated from Regency Era, England ... but she doesn't know it yet.

Then Drew Carmichael transfers into Lizzie's school at the beginning of the year, and she feels a connection to him, almost like she knows him. She can't stop thinking about him, but whenever she tries talking with him about the mysteries behind her feelings, he makes it clear that he wants nothing to do with her. Reaching him is even more difficult because she has a boyfriend, Jeremy, who has started to become full of himself after being elected co-captain of the varsity soccer team, and her flirtatious best friend Chelsea starts dating Drew soon after his arrival. So why can't she seem to get him out of her mind?

Even though Lizzie knows she should let go of her fascination with Drew, the pair of them soon find that fighting fate isn't going to be easy.

There are four ways you can enter, which you can do on the Rafflecopter form below. The giveaway will be open from November 25-27. Good luck!

Incarnate by Jodi Meadows

Genre: Young Adult Fantasy
Publication Date: January 31, 2012
Pages: 384
Publisher: HarperCollins Children's Books
Source: Received an ARC from the publisher

Goodreads Summary

NEWSOUL
Ana is new. For thousands of years in Range, a million souls have been reincarnated over and over, keeping their memories and experiences from previous lifetimes. When Ana was born, another soul vanished, and no one knows why.

NOSOUL
Even Ana’s own mother thinks she’s a nosoul, an omen of worse things to come, and has kept her away from society. To escape her seclusion and learn whether she’ll be reincarnated, Ana travels to the city of Heart, but its citizens are suspicious and afraid of what her presence means. When dragons and sylph attack the city, is Ana to blame?

HEART
Sam believes Ana’s new soul is good and worthwhile. When he stands up for her, their relationship blooms. But can he love someone who may live only once, and will Ana’s enemies—human and creature alike—let them be together? Ana needs to uncover the mistake that gave her someone else’s life, but will her quest threaten the peace of Heart and destroy the promise of reincarnation for all?

Jodi Meadows expertly weaves soul-deep romance, fantasy, and danger into an extraordinary tale of new life.

My Opinion

I loved Incarnate by Jodi Meadows! I wasn't sure what to expect going into this book -- all I knew was that reincarnation was involved, and in a way I'd never seen it before. It seemed like something I would like, and I was right. Jodi Meadows created a beautiful fantasy world, where for thousands of years, a million people have been reincarnated over and over again. I had lots of questions about why this happened, some that were answered in Incarnate, and some that were not. I'm excited to learn more about the mythology of the world as the series progresses.

I loved the romance between the two main characters, Ana and Sam. From the summary it was clear that Ana was a new soul, meaning she was a teenager, and Sam has been reincarnated for thousands of years, meaning he's a lot older than her, so at first I was worried that their relationship might come across as wrong because of their age gap. Luckily this wasn't the case. The author made it clear that even though the souls are reincarnated, body chemistry and age also contribute to how a person acts and behaves. Also, Ana and Sam were so perfect together that their age gap was easy to overcome. Their relationship grew throughout the book, which I liked.

Ana is a likable, relatable character who I found myself rooting for throughout the whole book. She's unsure of herself, but strong and determined at the same time. I'm excited to read more about her and the world Jodi Meadows created in the next book in the series. Also, there was a masquerade scene in this book, and it was done beautifully! So enchanting and magical. It was my favorite scene in the story. Incarnate is definitely a book I recommend picking up when it comes out in 2012.

In My Mailbox is a meme hosted by The Story Siren so we can share the books we've gotten in the past week :)

I've been trying to make videos for my IMM posts, but since I was away all weekend (one of my best friends got married and I was a bridesmaid! :) I don't have a video today. I've been traveling all day, and super tired isn't my best look ;)

But still, I'm super excited to share the books I got this week! Here they are:

Received the ARC for review from the publisher
I featured Incarnate on my Waiting on Wednesday post last week -- I'm so excited to read and review it! It seems like the author has put a really unique spin onto reincarnation, and has created a cool world along with it. I'm not quite sure what to expect from this book, but I do think it will be great! It's next on my to-read list once I finish my homework for the week, so look out for a review soon.

Received the e-ARC on NetGalley
I really enjoyed Unearthly, the first book in this series, and am looking forward to what happens in Hallowed!

Received the e-ARC on NetGalley
The summary for this book looks so unique and different from anything else I've read. I'm really excited to see what this book is all about!

That's all I got in my mailbox this week! Let me know what you got in yours by linking in the comments :)

Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

Genre: Young Adult Science Fiction
Publication Date: December 27, 2011
Pages: 336
Source: Received an e-ARC for review from NetGalley

Goodreads Description

Every other day, Kali D'Angelo is a normal sixteen-year-old girl. She goes to public high school. She attends pep rallies. She's human.

And then every day in between . . .She's something else entirely.

Though she still looks like herself, every twenty-four hours predatory instincts take over and Kali becomes a feared demon-hunter with the undeniable urge to hunt, trap, and kill zombies, hellhounds, and other supernatural creatures. Kali has no idea why she is the way she is, but she gives in to instinct anyway. Even though the government considers it environmental terrorism.

When Kali notices a mark on the lower back of a popular girl at school, she knows instantly that the girl is marked for death by one of these creatures. Kali has twenty-four hours to save her and, unfortunately, she'll have to do it as a human. With the help of a few new friends, Kali takes a risk that her human body might not survive. . .and learns the secrets of her mysterious condition in the process.

My Opinion

Going into this book I thought it was going to be a paranormal, and I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be science fiction. I've never read anything like Every Other Day before. Jennifer Lynn Barnes put an interesting spin onto a creature that's been a little overdone recently in YA fiction, and the originality in Every Other Day was a nice treat. The world was an alternate version of our world. Instead of Darwin discovering only evolution on his journey, he discovered preternatural creatures -- the scientific equivalent of the paranormal creatures in different mythologies.

The main character, Kali, is half-human, half-preternatural. She's spunky, daring, and adventurous, and I really enjoyed reading from her point of view. Also, since her father is a University professor of preternatural science, she was able to give good explanations to the reader about the science of the world she lived in. I also really loved the two secondary characters, Skylar and Bethany. Both of them were likable in their own ways. I wish the love story had a little bit more to it, but even so, I still found the book enjoyable.

I don't want to give anything away, but there are things that happened in the ending that took me by surprise. Every Other Day is not a predictable book, and it was nice to not know what was coming. (Even though some things that happened were really sad). I loved reading it, and highly recommend it!

Waiting on Wednesday: The Pledge by Kimberly Derting

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

The Pledge by Kimberly Derting
Release Date: November 15, 2011

In the violent country of Ludania, the classes are strictly divided by the language they speak. The smallest transgression, like looking a member of a higher class in the eye while they are speaking their native tongue, results in immediate execution. Seventeen-year-old Charlaina has always been able to understand the languages of all classes, and she's spent her life trying to hide her secret. The only place she can really be free is the drug-fueled underground clubs where people go to shake off the oppressive rules of the world they live in. It's there that she meets a beautiful and mysterious boy named Max who speaks a language she's never heard before . . . and her secret is almost exposed.

Charlie is intensely attracted to Max, even though she can't be sure where his real loyalties lie. As the emergency drills give way to real crisis and the violence escalates, it becomes clear that Charlie is the key to something much bigger: her country's only chance for freedom from the terrible power of a deadly regime.

I enjoyed Kimberly Derting's Body Finder books, and I can't wait to see what's in store for The Pledge! I've been reading a lot of dystopians lately (as has, I think, a lot of people ;) and I love them. This book seems like it has a lot of promise, and I'm looking forward to reading it.

  • Dystopian
  • Sci-Fi
  • Romance
  • Paranormal

Switched by Amanda Hocking

Genre: Young Adult Paranormal
Publication Date: January 24, 2012
Pages: 320
Source: Received an ARC for review from the publisher

Goodreads Description

When Wendy Everly was six-years-old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. It isn't until eleven years later that Wendy discovers her mother might have been right. With the help of Finn Holmes, Wendy finds herself in a world she never knew existed - a world both beautiful and frightening, and Wendy's not sure she wants to be a part of it.

My Opinion

Switched by Amanda Hocking is a beautiful and enchanting paranormal novel about a species I've never read about before in YA -- the Trylle! Which is basically a prettier way of saying "troll." Hocking does a great job creating an entirely new mythology about the Trylle and their way of life. Everything about them is explained clearly throughout the book, and I loved being able to learn about their way of life alongside the main character, Wendy.

Wendy was relatable, and I liked her. She always felt like she was different from the kids at her school, and even different from her family. Her mother hates her and tried to kill her when she was six years old, but she has a loving aunt and brother. I really liked her aunt and brother, and hope to see more of them in the next books in the trilogy.

When Wendy goes to live with the Trylle, she discovers in a very Princess Diaries-like way that she is a Trylle princess and is next in line for the throne. The book from that point on reminded me of a fairy tale, with the girl who is learning how to be a princess and feels like she just can't manage to do it right. If you love enchanting fairy tales, then this will definitely be a book for you!

Just like in many YA books, there were many guys vying for Wendy's affections! There was Finn, the hot Trylle who Wendy is forbidden to be with; Rhys, the hot human who is interested in Wendy but she is even more forbidden to be with; and Tove, the hot royal Trylle who would be an appropriate match for Wendy. I can't wait to see how her relationships with these three develop in the rest of the trilogy. I like them all, and I'm not even sure what "Team" I'm on yet!

In conclusion, Switched is an enchanting tale that I loved and highly recommend. There was also a huge cliff hanger at the end -- I need the next book NOW!

On the cover: The cover for Switched is gorgeous. The Trylle Trilogy has been on my to-read list for a while, but when I saw the new covers designed by St. Martins Press, I was amazed by their beauty and moved the books up on my list. The cover represents the enchanting feeling of the book perfectly!

Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi

Genre: Young Adult Dystopian
Publication Date: January 3, 2012
Pages: 400
Source: Received an ARC for review from the publisher

Goodreads Summary

Exiled from her comfortable home, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland – called the Death Shop – are slim. Violent energy storms can strike suddenly, and even the very air she breathes might kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He’s wild, dangerous – a savage. He’s also her only hope.

Because Aria alone holds the key to his redemption, Perry needs her, too. Their unlikely alliance will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky.

Debut author Veronica Rossi is accumulating fans from all over the globe—the book has already sold to more than twenty countries. It’s not surprising that foreign rights for this title have been flying off the shelf. It’s a tantalizing romance in any language.

My Opinion

When Under the Never Sky begins, you're thrown into a high tech, enclosed mini-city called a Pod where Aria lives. Because there's not much to do in the Pods, Aria's people use Smarteyes -- which reminded me of a big contact lens for one eye -- to virtually travel into "The Realms." First off, I need to say that the Realms sound so cool! Anything can happen, from underwater parties where people turn into mermaids, attending Medieval balls, to flying across mountaintops. I wish I could visit them :)

But when Aria gets into trouble, she's cast out of her Pod and sent to the Outside World, where the sky is constantly filled with Aether (super intense lightning storms) and people have gone back to more primitive forms of living. Except they're not as primitive as we first think. Some of them have special talents of their own.

Under the Never Sky is fast-paced, full of action, and also has a nice bit of romance. I like how the story is told from two points of views -- Aria's and Perry's -- so I could see and understand what was going on in the world Veronica Rossi created from opposite perspectives. And what a unique world it is! It felt like a mix of science fiction and fantasy, and I think fans of both will love this book.

Aria is a strong, likable female protagonist who will fight to stay alive even when the odds are stacked against her. Perry is a natural leader who will do anything for the people he loves. Combined, they were a great duo to read about. Another thing that made Under the Never Sky stand out was how the romance between Aria and Perry grew throughout the book. There was no "insta-love," which made their relationship realistic and believable. I also loved Cinder's character, and hope to learn more about why and how he is the way he is in the next book.

Under the Never Sky is the first in a series, and there was definitely a cliff hanger at the end that made me want to know more. I loved it and can't wait to see what happens to Aria and Perry as their adventure continues!

* * *

First of all, let's talk about the cover. How absolutely breathtaking is it?! I love the colors, and the mask (obviously, since I do love masks ;)

But what really makes me intrigued by this book is the description. It sounds like Jodi Meadows has created a fantastic new mythology, and I can't wait to learn about it. It also sounds like this book is going to have lots of adventure and romance -- both things I love.

I can't wait to read Incarnate! Counting down the days :)

Top Ten Books I Had VERY Strong Emotions About

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature on The Broke and the Bookish.

Now for ten books I had very strong emotions about!

1) New Moon by Stephenie Meyer.

I remember being so depressed while reading New Moon! I read it in a day, but midway through my parents stopped me so we could go to dinner as a family. I felt so sad at dinner, because Bella was so sad during New Moon. I knew I had to finish the book that night so I could stop being sad. And I loved the ending, once Edward was back in the picture!

2) The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I rarely cry while reading books, but the Hunger Games definitely got me crying. *Spoilers* The scene where Rue died, and when Katniss risked her life to get Peeta the medicine he needed.

3) The Iron Queen by Julie Kagawa

Ash and Meghan's relationship was so intense in this book! I loved them together, and the love Ash showed for Meghan was so sweet. Then there was the ending ... just very emotion-packed.

4) City of Glass by Cassandra Clare

Jace and Clary's relationship is what made this book so emotional for me. They were SO PERFECT together, but there were so many obstacles that it made this book almost painful to read. (In a good way, if that makes sense).

5) Divergent by Veronica Roth

This book was just full of so much EXCITEMENT, that I couldn't put it down!

6) Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

Such a sad and amazing book. I was entranced while reading it.

7) The Dead and the Gone by Susan Beth Pfeffer

This book had some really gritty, gruesome, realistic scenes of what the world could be like after an apocalyptic disaster. I'll never forget the images of Madison Square Garden full of body bags, and the main character finding the rotting corpse of his sister in an elevator. This was another book that I had to finish in one day, or else I would have felt unsettled while trying to sleep at night.

8) Unwind by Neal Shusterman

One scene in particular -- the unwinding -- will always haunt me.

9) Blood Promise by Richelle Mead

I think that out of all the Vampire Academy books, Rose went through the most in this one. The scenes with her and Dimitri were heart breaking.

10) Gone by Michael Grant

The horrifying scene of the kids with their hands in concrete blocks, walking down from the school like malnourished zombies, will never leave my mind.

In other news, I'm holding TWO contests this month. You can win by creating an unofficial cover and/or an unofficial book trailer for Remembrance! Find out the details and prizes by checking out this post.
