Three Day Juice Cleanse Fail!

Hi, everyone! As a few of my Facebook and Twitter followers know, I had set out to do a juice cleanse from July 7-9. I downloaded the Jason Vale "Keeping it Simple 3 Day Juice Cleanse" app on my iPhone, went to the grocery store to load up on the fruits and veggies I would be juicing for these three days, and was really excited. The program said that the cleanse would make you feel great, flush out toxins from the body, keep you full, provide you with all the nutrition your body needs, and when it's over you'll stop craving bad, unhealthy foods.

It sounds great, and I was super excited!

Here is what happened on Day One:

Started the day with hot water and a slice of lemon

I normally drink decaf tea, but this still tasted good.

For breakfast, I had the "Detox Special"

3 apples, 1 carrot, 1 in. lemon, 1/4 yellow bell pepper, 1 in. cucumber, 1/4 stalk celery, 1 in. broccoli, 1 in. red beet, 1 avocado
It tasted good, and I was feeling great and healthy that morning! Energized and totally normal. I went to the mall and was fine.

For lunch, it was time for the Detox Special again

Same ingredients as for breakfast
I went upstairs afterward to read and catch up on what I missed on the Big Brother live feeds. Then the tiredness kicked in. I never take naps -- I get enough sleep each night that they're not necessary -- and napping makes me feel lazy. Plus, I hate the waking up process (I'm NOT a morning person), and I don't want to make myself deal with the waking up process twice in a day! But I was so tired that I ended up taking an hour nap. I woke up annoyed that I was so tired, and blamed it on only having seven hours of sleep the night before (I generally need nine to feel fully awake during the day.) Not wanting to be in my bed any more, I went downstairs to make the "linner" drink.

Linner drink: the Jason Vale H20 Water

1 in. red beet, 1/2 apple, 1 in. pineapple, 1 in. lemon juiced and mixed with 3 cups water
I drank this and it was quite good -- I'll continue making these. Soon after, I was getting cranky and went upstairs to read so I wouldn't focus on how much I wanted solid food. I opened the book, and then I fell asleep while reading. I NEVER fall asleep reading. Reading is my all time favorite activity. I woke up an hour and a half later, tired and cranky. The first thing I thought was: "If I feel this way on Monday and Tuesday, there's no way I'll be able to be alert enough to focus on writing." And that would be unacceptable.

It was 6:00 PM, and I felt tired, cranky, hungry, and unfocused. This cleanse was supposed to make me feel great, but I felt the opposite. I concluded that something making me feel that awful couldn't be good for me, so I had solid, hot food for dinner. I instantly felt alert and energized.

Now I'm going to continue making fruit and veggie drinks in the morning for breakfast, because it IS a great way to incorporate healthy foods into your daily diet, and continue eating my normal low fat/high protein/high fiber/low carb solid foods for lunch and dinner (with an occasional guilty pleasure splurge from time to time!) But after that experience, I decided the human body requires a variety of food to function at top capacity. No more juice cleanses for me!

Have any of you tried a juice cleanse? What was your experience?

  1. I tried it for one whole day and hated it. I was STARVING! I didn't notice an increase in energy at all, and it didn't seem worth continuing on.

  2. I replied to your email before going to this article. When people stop smoking they feel awful but that does not mean they need to smoke. A juice cleanse does the same thing as fasting. So here is what Dr. Kennedy says about you.

Ron Kennedy, M.D. says "Fasting creates a condition of low concentration of toxic wastes in the circulatory system. This is sensed by the plasma membrane of each cell and each cell will then let go of its load of toxic wastes. When this happens suddenly, as it does with fasting, the result can be a sudden case of mild systemic toxemia as the system cleanses itself. Those who fast must be prepared for a phase of headache, irritability, insomnia and fatigue. This is a natural part of the healing process and should be welcomed."

    1. I am firmly in the belief that people need solid food to function properly. Solid healthy food is hardly in the same category as cigarettes! My body felt sick when I wasn't eating solid food because it needs solid food to survive and function at top capacity.

    2. "There is exactly zero scientifically supported evidence that they work to prevent or cure any illness," says David Seres, MD, director of medical nutrition at Columbia University Medical Center. Moreover, there is plenty of proof that swearing off food when you're sick is a terrible idea. "Given the multitude of experiences we've had where dietary alterations such as these have actually proven harmful, I think that the buyer needs to beware," says Dr. Seres. While juice is full of nutrients, he notes, "there are plenty of instances in nutrition where some is good and more is worse. All vitamins and minerals have some toxicity."

"The idea that your body needs help ridding itself of toxins is also false. While digesting food produces toxins, the body is made to eliminate them. 'The bowel cleanses itself,' says Marion Nestle, PhD, a professor of nutrition at New York University."

    3. Is there a difference between solid food and liquid food? You can blend any solid food and drink it. Also you could have eaten that produce instead of juicing it and it would be solid. Here is a saying. See if you can figure it out.

You should chew all of your liquids and drink all of your solid foods. It is not Zen Buddhism. It has to do with the saying to chew your food 40 times. You do not swallow the liquid right away but let it mix with saliva. Then you keep chewing any solid food until it becomes like a liquid.

Food companies have one goal and that is to make money. So they prefer you to weigh 700 pounds and eat huge amounts of food daily. An elephant eats 330 pounds of food on a bad day. On a good day they eat 375 pounds of food. Also sick people make money for doctors. Well people do not make money for doctors.

Food companies cannot do much with the produce you were eating above since they are not processed. [Produce is a generalized term for a group of farm-produced crops and goods, including (but not limited to) fruits and vegetables.]

But when processing foods, they can add lots of chemicals to make you fatter and more addicted to food. Then they make more money from you. Is this strategy working? Yes, 35% of Americans are obese.

Say that tomorrow I cured everyone of their health problems, what would happen? Michelle, you have a great imagination, so imagine what would happen. In fact you can write a fictional book about it. I would be the most hated person in America. All of the doctors and nurses would lose their jobs not to mention the people that assist them.

In fact Benjamin Franklin was a writer and a scientist. His discovery of electricity is the most important ever since you could not run a computer with steam. He said these quotes: "God heals, and the doctor takes the fees." "Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing." "To lengthen thy life, lessen thy meals."

      Live long and prosper!

    4. As far as scientifically supported evidence, why is health important? One big reason is so you can live longer. That is why they measure the average lifespan of people in every country. A woman from Japan said that Americans eat about 5 times the amount of food that they eat. The Japanese are the longest living people.

They have done lots of studies to see what would extend life and enable people to live longer. After lots of studies, they found only one thing that can extend life. They did the study with rats to make sure they have total control of it. The one that extended life was eating less.

"Since the 1930s, scientists have known that lab animals on high-nutrition, restricted-calorie diets live longer lives."

  3. says the following: "Mark Twain, the American writer, thought fasting was a cure for illness. He would cure his colds and fevers by not eating for one or two days."

He wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and its sequel, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885),[2] the latter often called "the Great American Novel."

As far as the body cleansing itself, it is like money. People earn money and spend money from the billionaire to the beggar. If anyone makes more than he spends, he will have extra money. Now if he spends more than he makes, he will be in debt.

So if your body cleanses more toxic waste out than it takes in and produces, then your body stays clean on the inside. If your body takes in more toxins than it cleanses out, then the toxic waste inside the body accumulates. So a fast gives the body a chance to catch up by not taking in toxins.

    1. This is all interesting, but I am not the average American in what I eat (I eat a very healthy diet and do not overeat). I eat many whole fruits and veggies and lots of lean meat. I made a personal decision to not continue with the cleanse because it was making me feel sick and unable to focus on my work. I'm not judging anyone by what they do, just doing what feels right for my body.

  4. TIL! I like to make me a cup of lemon tea too!

  5. Day 1 I failed and ate - had a salad in a pumpernickel wrap. Like you, I was ready start gnawing on my shirt and couldn't concentrate on anything but my hunger and food by around 6PM that evening. Either way, even if you eat once a day (and it be a reasonable, healthy meal) I feel the all day juicing otherwise still has positive effects. :)

  6. I still believe that weight loss depends on the metabolic process of ones body. Juice fasting may work for everyone coupled with good exercise and a healthy diet. Read also:

  7. I think, this "Detox Special" from fatigue isn't for all. When I drank it yesterday I find it unusual. But my sister liked and she made it again. I prefer sweet juices more. Here at the juicers for leafy greens, I find a lot interesting things too.

  8. Very interesting blog. Alot of blogs I see these days don't really provide anything that I'm interested in, but I'm most definately interested in this one. Just thought that I would post and let you know. pass urine test
